QCS for Nonwoven

QCS for Nonwoven

For a number of years Scienta has been developing special sensor technologies for the Nonwoven and Felt industries. We have been involved in projects for Fiberweb, Voith Paper Fabrics, Tamfelt and Ahlstrom just to name a few customers, for whom we have developed new measurement technologies to solve specific quality control issues.

These technologies have developed into the Scienta Concept, where a modular system of various sensors has been integrated into an easy to use online Quality Control System (QCS). We even use existing customer platforms (PLC, HMI etc) to make the maintenance as easy and cost effective as possible.

Scienta is specialized in the online QCS for thin nonwoven materials, which are measured by an integrated sensor measuring both
Basis Weight and Moisture Content using NIR (near infrared) light.

The new sensor is specifically designed to measure polypropylene i.e. spunbond and other thin nonwoven accurately using a special mirror construction, which compensates for the flocky structure of the web. The sensor has been developed in close cooperation with one of the major polypropylene web manufacturers.

The measurement principle for both Basis Weight and Moisture Content is based on NIR light as opposed to beta radiation, which is the most common way to measure Basis Weight. The absence of radioactive sources makes the sensor acceptable and easy to apply in most environments. No licenses are required from authorities, nor specific safety procedures established.
